Albania Travel Experiences

Rural part of AlbaniaSince the fall of the so-called "Iron Curtain", destinations in Eastern Europe have emerged as popular international party spots. Attracting everyone from brides- and grooms-to-be to intrepid travellers looking to have a good time, the Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have emerged as top favourites, however it's not necessary to turn your attentions so far north. Why risk the cold on your last night of freedom? Albania offers a much more temperate option, with a warm welcome guaranteed. Rather than follow in the footsteps of the well-trod track through Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius, why not sample all that Tirana has to offer?

From a night out with the girls at a local cocktail bar or a shopping and pamper experience with a local guide, to having a ball with the boys living it up with fun Tirana night life, there's a little something for everyone in this very affordable and party capital. Aside from the parties however, there are a whole host of adventure sport options, and all with the special flair that comes with being an ultimate traveller destination. Fancy some "ready, aim and fire" to test out your marksman skills at a local shooting range? What about feeling the rush of an exhilarating tandem skydive? When it comes to extreme sports you're spoilt for choice in the Tirana surrounds - that is, if you're prepared to leave behind the lush parks and cools bars of the hip and hospitable capital for an experience of a lifetime!

For instance, groups can go white-water rafting through the spectacular canyons of the Osumi River in south-central Albania or cycle through the Gramoz mountains from Korça to Përmeti. In general, ancient cities like Durrës (one hour from Tirana) make interesting hiking opportunities, and the sandy and pebbly beaches that stretch all the way up from scenic southern Albania along the Ionian and Adriatic coasts make great strolling, swimming and sunbathing options. The south of the country is home to misty snow-capped mountains and wide green valleys, making it ideal territory for extreme sports enthusiasts.

Downhill ZorbingStay tuned for: Zorbing in Tirana. Also known as "Sphereing", the latest extreme sport experience is currently only available in the United States and Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, Japan, India, Thailand, the Czech and Slovak republics, Slovenia, Sweden, Estonia and amazingly enough, the North Pole. Developed by those thrill-seekers downunder in Rotorua, on the North Island of New Zealand, "Sphereing" or "Zorbing" is a hilarious new experience during which participants roll and bounce down a hill in a giant transparent plastic orb at incredible speeds! Keep an eye out for its Albanian release, as it's sure to be a craze in the making!
